Olivia Watson: "The opening of the Finestres Palestina Bookshop has been met with an incredible reception, from the residents of Gràcia and from people who are sensitive to the cause of Palestine."

Hundreds of people attend the opening of the Finestres Palestine Bookshop.

On 15 May, Nakba Day, Carrer Verdi, 17 (Gràcia, Barcelona) was filled with hundreds of people who came to discover the Finestres Palestina bookshop, a new space dedicated to the dissemination of the culture, thought, and reality of the Palestinian people.

Sergi Ferrer-Salat, President of the Ferrer Foundations, Estefania Rico, director of the Ferrer Foundations and Olivia Watson, in charge of the Finestres Palestina Bookshop, shared the context, the objective, and the purpose of the initiative at a private press conference which also featured the participation of Raquel Martí, executive director of UNRWA Spain. The inauguration of the Finestres Palestina Bookshop was covered by 16 media outlets, among which stand out La Vanguardia, Librújula, elDiario.es and Núvol.

In the afternoon, the Bookshop opened its doors to the public, who also enjoyed artistic performances by Comando Señoras, Dal-yah and Marco Mezquida, co-ordinated activities with the transversal project of Palestinian Action to commemorate Nakba Day.

Once the first few days had passed, Watson celebrated that “the opening of Finestres Palestina has had an incredible reception, from the neighbours of Gràcia and from people sensitive to the cause of Palestine. There is a great demand for books on the geopolitical context, as well as fiction by Palestinian authors.”.

Soon, the bookshop will launch its ongoing programme of cultural activities, which will bring to Barcelonian audiences leading voices connected to Palestine. The activities will begin this June 4th with the journalist and researcher Mariam Barghouti and they will continue on the 16th of the same month with the presentation of the latest book by Tareq Baconi. You'll find the full programme for the Finestres Palestina Bookshop here.
