Luis Tabuenca Fernández wins the XLIII Queen Sofía Prize for Musical Composition

The jury, made up of the new artistic director of the Ferrer Music Foundation, Raquel García Tomás; the winner of the previous edition, Josep Planells Schiaffino; and also composers José Río-Pareja, Outi Tarkiainen, with Vasco Mendonça as president, has awarded the XLIII Reina Sofía Music Composition Prize to the work Rémanence, by Luis Tabuenca Fernández “for the clarity of its discourse, the gestural richness, and the effective use of orchestral forces.”.

The verdict was reached after hours of deliberation in which the 78 scores submitted for the competition were examined.

The winning work will premiere on 16 October 2026 at the Monumental Theatre in Madrid, premiered by the Spanish National Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra and attended by Her Majesty Queen Sofía. With €100,000, this prize, promoted by the Ferrer Music Foundation to encourage contemporary symphonic creation, is the best-endowed in Europe and enjoys great international prestige.
